UUM ONLINE: UUM recently received a working visit from the member of the Kedah State Executive Council cum Chairman of the Industrial and Investment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Higher Education Committee, Dato' Wira Dr. Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail at the Senate Meeting Room.
His arrival was welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani at the Foyer of the Chancellery Building. The honoured guest was then taken to Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Gallery before attending a briefing and discussion on the development of the state of Kedah state especially pertaining to institution of higher education.
During the three-hour meeting, the Vice-Chancellor presented the latest developments and achievements attained by UUM which were proclaimed by Dato' Wira Dr. Ku Rahman as fantastic!
The Kedah State Government Exco was also impressed and elated when the Vice-Chancellor informed him of UUM's latest position in the QS World University Rankings.
"As a foremost public university in the north, the Kedah State Government is very hopeful that both parties can work together and share their direction to further develop the state, and ultimately the education institutions," he said.
He further added that with the expertise possessed by UUM, it could replace external consultants in assisting the state government in developing Kedah.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir also expressed hope that UUM could collaborate with the Kedah State Government.
Dato' Wira Dr. Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail also expressed hope that the state government could assist UUM in terms of funding so that academics at the University could conduct research activities and programmes that would benefit both the state and the people of Kedah.
"UUM does not just produce successful graduates but it is also ever ready to help the Kedah state government to move forward," he said.
At the session, the Vice-Chancellor together with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and UUM College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Assistant Vice-Chancellor also presented their respective plans in establishing the UUM Centre for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The Vice-Chancellor said UUM was working hard to set up the Centre for STEM to help disseminate knowledge of STEM especially at the grassroots levels as instructed by His Royal Highness Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, the Sultan of Kedah in his royal message distributed to Kedah State Assemblymen (ADUN) in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the first meeting of the 14th Kedah State Legislative Assembly last April.

UUM-KERAJAAN NEGERI KEDAH BINCANG HALA TUJU PENDIDIKAN DEMI PEMBANGUNAN BERSAMA
UUM ONLINE: UUM telah menerima lawatan kerja Ahli Mesyuarat Kerajaan negeri Kedah merangkap Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Industri dan Pelaburan, Pengajian Tinggi, Sains Teknologi dan Inovasi, Dato' Wira Dr. Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail di Bilik Mesyuarat Senat, baru-baru ini.
Kedatangan beliau disambut Naib Canselor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani di Foyer Canselori, seterusnya beliau dibawa melawat Galeri UUM sebelum meneruskan sesi taklimat dan perbincangan berkaitan pembangunan negeri Kedah khususnya melibatkan institusi pengajian tinggi.
Dalam pertemuan kira-kira tiga jam itu, Naib Canselor telah membentangkan perkembangan dan pencapaian terkini UUM yang diakui Dato’ Wira Dr. Ku Rahman sebagai ‘Fantastic!’
Exco Kanan Kerajaan Negeri Kedah itu juga berasa kagum dan bangga apabila Naib Canselor memaklumkan tentang kedudukan terkini UUM dalam QS World University Rankings yang meningkat setiap tahun.
“Universiti merupakan gedung ilmu dan universiti sangat dekat dengan jiwa saya kerana minat dalam bidang ilmu, selain kesukaan membaca bagi mendapatkan pengetahuan baru.
“Sebagai sebuah universiti awam utama di utara tanah air, Kerajaan Negeri Kedah amat berharap agar kedua pihak dapat bekerjasama dan mengetahui hala tuju masing-masing demi membangunkan negeri ini, seterusnya institusi pendidikan,” katanya.
Tambah beliau, dengan kepakaran dimiliki UUM diharap dapat menggantikan konsultan luar dalam membantu pihak kerajaan dalam membangunkan Negeri Kedah.
Sementara itu, Naib Canselor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir berkata, beliau juga berharap UUM dapat mengadakan kolaborasi dengan Kerajaan Negeri Kedah.
Menurutnya, beliau dengan harapan agar kerajaan negeri dapat membantu UUM dari aspek dana supaya ahli akademik di universiti ini dapat menjalankan aktiviti penyelidikan dan program yang akan memanfaatkan negeri Kedah dan rakyat.
“UUM bukan sekadar mengeluarkan graduan yang berjaya tetapi juga sentiasa bersedia membantu kerajaan negeri Kedah untuk maju ke hadapan,” katanya.
Pada sesi tersebut, Naib Canselor bersama Timbalan-timbalan Naib Canselor, Pendaftar, Bendahari dan Penolong Naib Canselor UUM CAS turut membentangkan tentang perancangan menubuhkan Pusat Sains, Teknologi, Kejuruteraan dan Matematik (STEM).
Naib Canselor berkata, UUM kini sedang berusaha untuk menubuhkan Pusat STEM tersebut bagi menyebar pengetahuan dalam bidang berkenaan kepada semua peringkat terutamanya akar umbi seperti yang disarankan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, Sultan Kedah dalam titah baginda yang diedarkan kepada Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Kedah bersempena Istiadat Perasmian Mesyuarat Pertama Penggal Ketiga Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Kedah Ke-14 pada April lalu.
Katanya, UUM berhasrat untuk menzahirkan harapan Tuanku Sultan yang menginginkan kerajaan negeri dan UUM menetapkan hala tuju pendidikan negeri dengan memperkasakan bidang tersebut.
