UUM ONLINE: UUM Centres of Excellence (CoE) should set a clear focus in their niche areas in order to be relevant to industry, society, and the nation in accordance with the needs of the moment.

In this regard, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato’ Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that the CoE should have both short-term and long-term planning in place, extending, at least, by a period of five years into the future, in order to graduate into CoE of national stature.

"However, short-term planning also needs to work out within its allotted duration of between one and two years, complete with the outcome from the research, or publication, by UUM researchers.

"Each piece of research relies on the CoE, which functions as a platform for generating many more undertakings in high-impact research," he said when chairing the inaugural meeting of the CoE Achievement and Strategic Development Committee (JKCoE) at the Senate Room, recently.

He added that “a university that succeeds in research is a university that has a CoE of its own to enable it to advance further ahead in the field.”

According to him, the JKCoE meeting would be held quarterly to view the progress, or achievement, of the various CoE, of which there are 6 University Centres of Excellence (U-CoE), 21 School Centres of Excellence (SCOE), and 31 Research Units (RU).

At the meeting, among the U-CoE that presented their initial reports were the Asian Research Institute of Corruption (ARIC) and the Asian Research Institute of Finance and Banking (ARIFB). The presentations were given by Assoc. Prof. Dr Hairuddin Megat Latif and Dr. Irwan Shah Zainal Abidin, respectively.

Also present at the meeting were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof Dr Noor Azizi Ismail; the Director of the RIMC, Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, and senior UUM officials.

CoE PERLU ADA FOKUS JELAS DAN RELEVAN KEPADA KEPERLUAN SEMASA
